Granby the town of Colorado was originally a
logging and railroad ranching community founded in 1905. Over the years this
small, rustic and sleepy town witnessed phenomenal growth and has developed into
a major tourist destination mostly because of its prime location and amazing
scenery. Granby lies between two big attractions
of Colorado; the Winter
Park and the Grand
Lake. It also serves as
the entrance to the Rocky
Mountain National
Park from the western side.
Tourism has emerged as a big industry in this
otherwise quiet town which sees a lot of tourists during summers and winters.
One of the main reasons of its popularity is that Granby is more affordable than any other
resort in the neighboring area and provides the same exciting activities as others.
Plus it is just an hour’s drive away from the city of Denver. Granby
has two National Parks; it houses 97 ranches, 6 guest ranches, 2 ski areas and
4 golf courses.
If you plan to visit Granby
during summers, you can enjoy the hikes in the surrounding Arapahoe National Park.
Hiking, biking, mountain climbing are the common summer activities at all
resorts in Colorado.
Horse riding is more popular in Granby mainly
due to the presence of ranches and stables and riding through the Granby trails is an unforgettable
experience. You can also see the native wildlife as elks and moose are a common
sight in the Rocky
Mountain National
Park. There are other species of wildlife as well
which can be seen as you follow the trails.
The warm hospitality of the area attracts
tourists during the cold winters as well. In winters Granby offers snow events
like cross country skiing, skating, snowmobiling and snow boarding and the
thrilling down slope skiing. In the SolVista
Basin skiing and snowboarding
can be thoroughly enjoyed as it involves the whole family.
The SolVista Basin
comprises of two mountains separate but connected to each other. The eastern
mountain is for junior skiers and for the intermediate ones while the more
experienced and advanced skiers can have the time of their lives on the western
mountain. There is a separate area for first time skiers on the eastern
mountain. Skiing equipment can be rented from the premises and there is
facility for skiing lessons as well. There are 33 snow trails and 5 chair
lifts. Besides skiing, fishing, golf and
camping can also be done in SolVista. SolVista is a fun package for the whole
family.
Another place worth mentioning in Granby is the Lake
Granby. It is a well known
fishing spot spread over an area of 7250 acres. Lake
Granby provides many
recreational activities such as water sports, white water rafting, (boats can
also be rented for) boating, power boating and of course fishing. It is also a
popular camping ground.
A vacation in Granby does not create a sizeable dent in
your wallet. The accommodations available range from Granby vacation rentals to single cabins all costing less than the accommodations
in other resorts. In Granby, there is the typical western cuisine to tempt your
palate. In some guest ranches, visitors can enjoy the gourmet meals in the
traditional ranch surroundings. Rodeo is another event to keep you entertained.
Despite commercialization, Granby
has retained much of its rustic charms and is a place you would want to go
every year.
